The goal was to raise $1.5 million to address local challenges, including poverty, unemployment, addictions and mental health. The campaign was an astounding success, surpassing the goal and raising over $2.1 million!

This achievement could not have been realized without the incredible financial support of our partnering financial institutions, Foundations, corporate and individual donors, the Foundation & Society Boards of Directors, and the Society’s Staff and Management. We also celebrate the extraordinary grant-funding partnerships with New Beginnings, Beauty is Me, Windsor Public Library, Hiatus House and the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit, ensuring the delivery of the most mpactful, evidence-based and life-changing programs funded by this campaign.

These partnerships empowered youth to build life and work skills through mentorship and job placements. They provided access to books and inspired the love of reading in our Kinship Service children and families. They allowed for direct financial support to youth for enhanced wraparound mental health & academic success. Community Leaders and Mentors gathered to empower black and biracial youth to create cultural connections and embrace their identity through enriching activities and learning opportunities. They also contributed to investing many hours of support and education in working intensively with caregivers to help them face their life challenges, overcome their trauma experiences, build effective parenting skills, and develop the resiliency they need for brighter days ahead, for themselves and their children.

The collective contributions of our donors and community partners assured the Foundation that the fundraising goal would be more than matched with earnest compassion and a steadfast commitment to support a movement focused on uplifting our most vulnerable children, youth, and families. Although we wrap up the campaign, its success will endure and continue to inspire hope. We are sincerely grateful to Keith Negley, Editor and children’s book Illustrator, for the beautiful image that he created to brand the campaign. The image will remain on the front façade of the building, representing a caring community that honours the children, youth, and families who bravely face the many obstacles in their way, to embrace new possibilities filled with light and hope for tomorrow.

As a result of a Community Impact Grant of $15,000 from the WindsorEssex Community Foundation, the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Foundation (WECAF) is able to launch the “Growing a Love of Learning” program.   This is a collaboration between WECAF and the Windsor Public Library.

The ”Growing a Love of Learning” program will provide children and youth living in kinship homes with a personalized book library, which will include books tailored to their reading interests, reading level, learning needs, and identity to offer children and youth more opportunities to engage in reading with materials that they enjoy; help children and youth gain confidence in their reading skills; promote equity, accessibility, and ownership of reading materials; and encourage Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society (WECAS) kinship families to read together more often.

In partnership with the Windsor Public Library, a library learning event will be held at a library branch midway through the program.  Kinship caregivers will have the opportunity to listen to and interact with a keynote speaker with expertise in reading/literacy as well as receive information about resources in the community and the programming they can access.

Cheryl Sprague, President of the WECAF comments, “The Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Foundation is very appreciative of this generous grant from the WindsorEssex Community Foundation that will inspire learning and reading amongst many of the children, youth and families that WECAS serve.  Promoting a love of learning at an early age can only plant the seeds for an enriching tomorrow”.

Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society (WECAS) is thrilled to now support more than 20 additional individuals build work-life skills for the future thanks to a RBC Future Launch donation. This donation builds on RBC’s ongoing commitment since 2018, now totalling $250,000, supporting the Capturing a Future Through Life Opportunities, Leadership and Experience program.

This comprehensive job skill training program provides hands-on employment experiences that align to the participants’ interests, development opportunities and skills.  The goals are to provide youth with basic and essential skills to job search, how to prepare for and interact in an employment setting, and how to expand these skills and opportunities into career aspirations.

“We are thankful to RBC for this enormous support of youth.  This program has not only provided tangible knowledge and resources, it has served to ignite hope, and momentum within youth to pursue future aspirations.  In many cases, the program has been awe-inspiring as youth gain confidence in themselves and their abilities to achieve success”, says Derrick Drouillard, Executive Director of WECAS.

The youth that WECAS serves face challenges such as poverty, unemployment, addictions and mental health challenges.  Many do not have the means or preparedness to consider traditional post-secondary options.  This program provides them with the tools and resources to begin an employment search as well as an opportunity to have hands on-experience in an employment setting that corresponds with their individual interests.  The success rate has been high as youth have obtained full-time employment or have determined what they would like to pursue in terms of a vocation or further education.

“We’re excited to be working with WECAS to help bring RBC Future Launch to life through their incredible skills development program,” says Fran Savoni, Regional Vice President, Windsor Kent County, RBC.  “When experience is so important to getting a job – but so hard to gain, young people are left feeling uncertain about their futures. We hope that through our partnership with WECAS, RBC Future Launch can help young people get those all-important first jobs and break the ‘no experience, no job’ cycle.”

Amazon Canada donates $10,000 to Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Foundation https://www.wecaf.on.ca/amazon-canada-donates-10000-to-windsor-essex-childrens-aid-foundation/ Tue, 10 Jan 2023 15:29:09 +0000 http://www.wecaf.on.ca/?p=7415

Amazon Canada delivered a $10,000 cheque and boxes of household and personal care items to the Windsor Essex Children’s Aid Society just in time for the holidays. Along with Wednesday’s donation, Amazon Canada committed to deliver more goods to WECAS in 2023.

“We’re happy to support a partnership with Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Foundation,” said Brooks Barnett, manager of economic development at Amazon. “For us this is a no brainer.

“The great work that is being done here by everybody on the team matches our commitment to lifting communities and that’s what you can expect from Amazon in Windsor moving forward.” Cheryl Sprague, president of the WECAF board of directors, said the foundation is very appreciative to Amazon Canada for selecting the local children’s aid society as their charity this holiday season and beyond.

“The impact of the donations that they will provide to children, youth and families that the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society supports will be immense,” Sprague said. “Our families and youth struggle with many challenges. This partnership with Amazon will serve to decrease the financial and emotional burden for many.”

Windsor Mayor Drew Dilkens was scheduled to join the gathering of Windsor councillors, chamber of commerce president Rakesh Naidu, society staff and others for the presentation but he was delayed in arriving back from a business trip to South Korea.

Coun. Mark McKenzie spoke on behalf of the mayor, saying he sent his heartfelt thanks. “CAS does so much to help local families,” McKenzie said. “Especially at Christmas time, it’s a hard time for many. “And Windsor is definitely the city of giving — not only residents but also our many unions definitely support local residents.

We know that Amazon is going to be a great partner for that for years to come.” The partnership with the Windsor Essex Children’s Aid Foundation is Amazon’s first in Windsor. An Amazon delivery station is slated to launch in Windsor in 2024.

Some Windsor-Essex youth should soon be feeling the warmth, thanks to several local car dealerships. The Rafih Auto Group’s We Care program on Thursday donated winter coats, hats and gloves to the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society. The winter wear was collected during the month of December from all the company’s dealerships in Windsor, Essex and Leamington.

Each dealership asked customers, staff and partners to donate gently used items, as well as gift cards, for those in need. Rafih Auto Group vice-president Zeyad Rafih also purchased new coats to boost the donation total. “It’s very important to the Rafih Auto Group to give back to the community and for the second year, we have assisted Children’s Aid Society families in need in our community,” Rafih said in a news release. “We always want to give back to the community, especially at this time.” A presentation was held Thursday at the Jaguar Land Rover Windsor dealership on Tecumseh Road East.

Beneficiaries sing praises of WECAF https://www.wecaf.on.ca/thanks-fortis-group-2/ Mon, 31 Oct 2022 17:43:56 +0000 http://www.wecaf.on.ca/?p=7373

Grinning beneath her blue and white mask, Emily’s eyes are alight with a sparkle unique to those truly joyful. Her thick brown hair frames a friendly, beautiful face. Her gait is confident, quick, and purposeful.

In the elevator of the Windsor Essex Children’s Aid Society, as Emily prepares to share her story and why the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Foundation (WECAF) has been so important for her, she grips the folder which holds the list of all the things she can recall, over her young life, that the Foundation has made possible.

“I’m such a big advocate for other youth to have the experiences I had in foster care,” she shares. “Because as a child in foster care, you often feel left out, like you don’t have the same opportunities as other youth. You genuinely just don’t know about the different resources that should and could be available to you, and what WECAF made possible for me I can look back on and know I loved it so much.

“Each and every experience I had as a result of their generosity was 100 per cent something that is almost indescribable – the impact that this group had on myself as a developing person, someone coming into her own as a young person, and eliminating the stigma about being in care… this badge of honour I carry could not have ever been possible if it weren’t for WECAF and for this entire system that carried me.”

WECAF was founded to provide financial support, through fundraising initiatives, that contributes to the well-being, safety, and increased opportunities for children, youth and families supported by the Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society. The mandate of the organization is to fund programs for these children to be able to reach their maximum potential, through which kids can develop skillsets for daily living and future employment, self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-love.

The programs funded by the Foundation are vast. “I don’t even know if I can count the ways the Foundation has been able to help me from when I was little until literally right at this moment,” says Emily. “I did group therapies, one-on-one talk therapy. I got to go to summer camp every year, which was something so important to me, because when my friends got back from Europe or other exciting summer excursions, I got to say that I went to summer camp, even overnight summer camp.

“The Foundation paid for my swimming lessons, the way they will for any other youth interested in whatever sport they’ve set their heart on, and even paid for my new bathing suits year after year, as well as the $20 I’d need to pay for my races when I couldn’t afford it out of my small allowance.

“And then there was my involvement on the Youth Advisory Committee, which is a way for me to advocate for our youth in care.

“I want to cry,” continues Emily. “I know I’m listing all of these unbelievable experiences, but I can’t even really verbalize how much it has meant to have this support. When you consider that some kids have flipped through ten or 15 homes because of placement breakdown, when you think about the loss of normality in the lives of youth in care, when you think about the amount of money that it takes just to exist, and you have no parents to fall back on – that’s what the Foundation gives.

“When you don’t have a biological family who can give you financial support to help you reach your full potential, you realize how money is a huge part of breaking that intergenerational cycle of being in care, of being impoverished, of only knowing low standards of living. A person can truly never comprehend how this financial support – whether it’s $20 here or fees for swimming lessons there – can change a life.”

Today, thanks to a full ride scholarship gained by Emily through academic excellence and the work she has contributed to the Children’s Aid Society, she’s a registered nurse.

For Tracey, a “kin mother” who fought for – and won – legal custody for her “kiddos,” the WECAF was, for a long time, a lifeline.

“The CAS was a guiding light, and the Foundation was so important in helping me provide a stable environment,” Tracey shares. “The kids had never experienced sports. They had never experienced dance classes, or any recreational activities.

“But what the Foundation really did was provide this sense of safety, like ‘you mean we’re not going to hurt anymore? We don’t have to worry about food? We can play? We can be kids?’ And how can you put a dollar value on that?”
